Cows, Garlic & Vegetarianism
For string quartet
Cows, Garlic and Vegetarianism points cheekily to the troubles of flatulence, as discussed in the BBC article, surrounding the use of garlic in cow feed as a way of controlling the methane that is produced in their stomachs.
In the first movement, the score for each part is in the shape of a cow and each player requires a page rotator. The second movement makes use of notated garlic, whereby fragments of music were hand drawn onto each bulb. Some fragments consist of vocal sounds, while others use extended techniques to create special effects on the instrument.
This piece explores the idea of notation as a work of art.
